A DAY AT HAVANT FIRE STATION

In October some of our prefects went on a trip to Havant Fire Station to develop our leadership skills. We spent the day focusing on how to lead others in small groups working with the Fire Brigade who had all given up their free time to work with us.

The first activity was an obstacle course. We had to transport a bucket of water without spilling it or touching it, with only rope tied to it to move it. It was a fairly simple task and we completed it, but then they blindfolded us so we had one person that could see leading us around the course.

As a group we had to flip a mat over without any of us touching the floor. We had to work together and think about each other’s strengths and weakness to accomplish the task.

The next activity was a scenario where we had to rescue a body. We were blindfolded because if you went into a smoky house you wouldn’t be able to see. We then had to follow guide ropes that went throughout the room to find the body and then bring it back.

Our afternoon activities began with paired work. We were put into boy/girl pairs where one was blindfolded and the other had to guide them. They had to get to four cones and somewhere they had to pick up some rope handcuffs. It was hard because there was about fifteen people all talking at once.

Our final task was to climb a ladder up the fire station tower. This was the height of a three storey building. For some people it was very scary because they didn't like heights but everyone gave it a go.

At the end of the day we all received a certificate and I got the award for having the best leadership skills throughout the day. I would really encourage the school to do this with future prefects because it was good fun and we learnt a lot about team work and leadership skills.
