Across the centuries acts of philanthropy large and small have made life less harsh, opening up opportunities for the individuals involved. This course traces the history of philanthropy in the south from the medieval to the nineteenth century, considering the lives of local benefactors and what they sought to achieve together with evidence of these acts of kindness that remain today.
