Dementia Friendly Hayling Island

Dementia Friendly Hayling Island is a community action group, part of the Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia Friendly Communities initiative. Our goal is to make Hayling Island a more understanding and inclusive place for people living with dementia, We are working to ensure that they are able to carry on living independent lives and taking a meaningful and active part in their local community for as long as possible. Two thirds of people with dementia live in the community and a large proportion of them feel unsupported and that their needs are not well understood. Our aim is to improve this situation.

To do this we are inviting local businesses, community groups and organisations to attend free Dementia Friends Information sessions and consider how they might take action to help those living with dementia. We also hold free sessions for the general public, schools and social and leisure groups. Those attending are invited to become Dementia Friends, and take action, however simple, to improve life for those living with dementia.

Nationally, over 2 million people have become Dementia Friends, and on Hayling Island, nearly 400 people have signed up to this initiative, and 20 businesses and organisations have joined us in our first six months.

We hope to spread this project to the whole of Havant Borough in due course.
