Open Hive

Nestled in the lush hills of Horndean, hides a small family run charity called Open Hive, which was founded by James and Marie Wheeldon. We're very unique as our mission extends beyond honey production. We are dedicated to giving back to the community through rehabilitation, mental well-being, and fostering connections with nature, achieved through our love of bees.

At Open Hive, our honeybees play a unique role in supporting individual and community wellness. By immersing our visitors in the natural world, we provide an escape from the stresses of everyday life. The fragrant wildflowers, melodic birdsong, and gentle sounds of nature create an environment conducive to healing and restoration.

What truly distinguishes Open Hive is our personal approach to beekeeping. We invite visitors, from curious schoolchildren to busy professionals into the enchanting world of bees. Equipped with protective gear, guests are encouraged to be hands-on with our hives and witness the remarkable teamwork and organization of thousands of bees. It’s a humbling and inspiring sight, one that stays with people long after they leave.

Our hands-on workshops transcend mere honey-making education. They offer opportunities to reconnect with nature and appreciate the immense impact bees have on our food systems, environment, and collective well-being.

Although we don’t produce a lot of honey, when we do, our jars tell a story of hope and community. A portion of each sale supports poverty-reduction projects, while the remainder sustains our hives and the ecosystems that support them. Some hives are dedicated to charitable partnerships, allowing individuals and companies to sponsor a colony and witness the positive changes.

At Open Hive, we believe that true luxury lies in what we give back. Whether you purchase our honey, participate in a hive experience, or follow our journey on Instagram @openhivebeekeeping, you become part of something greater.
