HHS - return of our summer show

HHS logoArticle from the Hayling Island Horticultural Society

After an absence of three years, and a change of venue, the Hayling Island Horticultural society’s Summer Show finally took place on Saturday the 9th July in its new venue at The Hayling College.

As well as the return of the traditional show format with entries for flowers, fruit and vegetables, there were also classes for cookery, handicrafts and photography. Pictures tell the real story of the Show so we hope you enjoy seeing some of the beautiful entries we received. We were particularly pleased to have a large number of Junior entries in all categories.

Mengham Junior School won several prizes for the salad vegetables, radish, spinach and French beans all grown in their own garden under the guidance of Tony Athill – Growing Together Project Coordinator.

The Men Only Cherry Cake Class was won by 7 year old Fox Wells- Fawcett!

A pleasing number of people turned up to see the Show and enjoyed the tea and cakes, plant sale, and tombola.

In addition, The HIHS Trading Centre, the Wildlife Trust, Hayling tree Wardens, Recycle Hayling and the Hampshire Beekeepers all were present and added to the occasion.

The Mayor, Cllr Diana Patrick, presented the prizes, with Ron Duffield our President closing the event at the end of the afternoon. With thanks to all our helpers and The Hayling College and to everyone who entered and came along on the day to support us.  The success of events like this depends on volunteers and supporters.

Tuesday 27th September at 7.30pm. - GARDENERS’ QUESTION TIME EVENING
A panel of experts will be there to answer all your questions and please bring along any samples to share with them (in clear plastic bags!)  We would also particularly like to see any flowers still flourishing in your garden.
