Coastal Scene Art for Rowlands Castle Painting Society

Local artist Jo Silcock led a workshop on abstract seascapes last week at Rowlands Castle. First she talked about how she applies her ideas about ‘Abstraction’, the removal of parts of the scene she sees, to simplify it. As an example and to ‘warm us up’ we all had a few minutes to look at a postcard and draw the bare bones of the picture. Jo then described how her work evolves as she maps out the picture. We were encouraged to work fast and use a limited palette of two shades of blue, yellow, white and black. She recommended we had either a high horizon or a low one, never one in the middle or to try a curved horizon. Jo also demonstrated the range of household objects she uses to apply paint. Some members used a different medium, as is their choice, but the method worked best in acrylic. There was a good turnout of members who thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.

There is a series of Demo/workshops and Life/portrait sessions until the end of April at Rowlands Castle Parish Rooms on Tuesday afternoons 2pm-4.30pm. Check our website for details: http://rowlandscastlepaintingsociety.co.uk
