Three in a row for Chichester Harbour

Chichester HarbourChichester Harbour Conservancy Rangers have scored a hat trick with recent footpath improvements in Ella Nore, Emsworth and Bosham. The latest improvement took place last week, where around 25 volunteers from Friends of Chichester Harbour helped lay footpath material and cut back brambles to improve a muddy, waterlogged stretch of the Ella Nore coastal path, running north from Snowhill to Ella Nore Spit.

Access to the coastal path is limited at present so they were unable to continue further north of Ella Nore, but there are plans to continue improvement of the path in the future. Keith Rathbone, Countryside Ranger at Chichester Harbour Conservancy said “the volunteers did a wonderful job and walkers have already made positive comments, which makes it all worthwhile. The sun was out whilst we were working, which is always nice at this time of year.”

Over 55,000 birds come to Chichester Harbour each year to feed and nest. The coastal path runs alongside a protected saltmarsh area and we ask walkers to protect this delicate habitat by following the footpath and keeping dogs under control. People and dogs can disturb birds that are busy feeding at the moment, causing them to fly off and waste valuable energy which they will need to migrate.

Chichester Harbour is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is protected by several national and international designations.
