Horizon Making Life Better

Horizon Leisure Centres (the charity that operates both Havant and Waterlooville Leisure Centres) is pleased to announce exciting plans to open a brand new Gym at Havant Leisure Centre.

The decision to create the new Gym is in response to the continued growth in customer demand highlighted during certain peak times. Planning consent was provided in January and the work to refurbish the former 6-lane Indoor Bowls Hall, which is part of the existing Leisure Centre, commenced on 3 March. The plan is for the new Gym to be open in July.

The new Gym will be five-times larger than the existing one (11,400ft2) which it is set to replace and will comprise 160 state of the art cardio-vascular and weight resistant work-stations and a unique 40m 3-lane indoor running track. In addition there will be a dedicated fitness area that will have programmed sessions for ladies-only, families and teenage workouts to provide an allinclusive facility that will attract the whole community

The improved and relocated gym is being provided as part of the increasingly successful partnership between operators Horizon Leisure Centres and landlords Havant Borough Council.

Howard Broad, Chief Executive of Horizon Leisure Centres said, “The growth in memberships and casual usage of the Gym over recent years has been increased further following the Olympics and Paralympics. This, together with our affordable and value membership packages has resulted in difficulties meeting customer demand and the time is now right to improve the gym facilities and capitalise on the legacy opportunities this presents.

The new and significantly enlarged Gym will help Horizon meet its charitable objectives by encouraging the whole community to take up healthy exercise to tackle obesity and improve social well-being.

It will also help meet the Government target of getting ‘more people, more active, more often’ and address the fact that nationally Havant has below-average participation level in adult sport.

The Board of Trustees and staff at Team Horizon are excited at the plan to open the new Gym facility at Havant in July which will help achieve the Charity’s vision of ‘Making Life Better’!”

The Council are very happy with the operation of their two Leisure Centres which has seen them both receive reaccreditation of the prestigious Quest quality assurance scheme for the efficient running of sport and leisure facilities. As a result, in exchange for the significant investment to be made by the Charity, the Council has agreed to extend the length of the current lease.
